Solar Modules II

performed: Summer 2024

In this project, we further developed the idea of our first solar module calculator. The goal was to maximize the number of solar modules of any size that can be placed, even on complex roof surfaces with obstacles such as chimneys and skylights.

First, the user can create the roof surface based on the lengths and angles of the sides. There are no limits to complexity.

Next, the user can freely place chimneys and skylights. These can be fully customized in size and position and can also be used as placeholders for other obstacles.

Once all obstacles are placed, the user can either place solar modules manually or have them placed automatically by the application. For this, we developed an optimization algorithm in collaboration with mathematics PhD students. The application allows users to prioritize either the maximum number of modules or contiguous module placement.

Finally, the user can export the completed roof layout, including calculated costs and other metrics, as a PDF.
